Free Trials

Canterbury Artistic Swimming is looking for new members and we'd love to see you poolside to give synchro a try.  We have dedicated coaches running our 'mini-dolphin' trials with trainee coach support in the pool for children of any age.  Not just for the kids, we have a 'Masters' session for those over 20 years of age to come along, make friends and learn a new sport.

There are two training venues for trial sessions:

  • Pool space for 2024 is being confirmed

We offer two trial sessions completely free of charge (includes pool entry).  If you would like to join us, email:  canterburyartisticswimming@gmail.com today and we can organise a time.

Training

We have boys, girls, men and women in our teams.  We take swimmers from 5 years old to 95 years.  As a beginner 'mini-dolphin' or 'master', training is offered as a weekly session for 90 minutes and includes stretching, swim warmup and figure skills.

Beginners work through 'Kiwistar' awards to progress to our next team level with the option of swimming recreationally or competitively as their skills improve.

Training follows the school terms throughout the year.  We run a Summer Camp in January for team-building and pre-season training but otherwise school holidays are synchro free as are public holiday weekends.

Competitions

Every year our athletes have the opportunity to compete at a South Island Championships and the Artistic Swimming New Zealand National Championships. These are hosted at different regions of the country every year so this a great chance for our athletes to travel.  Athletes are encouraged to trial for New Zealand National squads and some have represented New Zealand internationally.  For 2024 Nationals will be in Hamilton and South Island in Queenstown.

Fees

Fees are invoiced at the beginning of each term and include athlete entry fees to pools.  If an athlete starts during the term, they will be invoiced from their third lesson onwards.  (Please advise the secretary if your athlete has full membership at Christchurch City Council Pools).  We endeavour to keep costs as low as possible and fundraising opportunities are available throughout the year.  Current fees for mini-dolphin athletes are approximately $200 for a ten week term.

Masters athletes will need to cover their own pool entry following the two free trials.

Our coaches are professionals and are paid for their expertise.  We also encourage our athletes to assist with coaching and have trainee coaches at most sessions.  The Committee, Officials and Judges are all volunteers.

Equipment

The only items needed for regular sessions are one-piece togs (plain black if you need to buy new ones), goggles, a yoga mat or towel, a swimming cap and a nose clip.

Competitive athletes will need CAS training togs, plain black swimming togs and decorated routine togs.  We have a club uniform with some items compulsory for those competing.  Please refer to the Uniform Page for details.
